nasa is literally trying to rescue a falling space telescope
nasa launched an emergency mission with katalyst space technologies to try to keep the swift observatory from reentering earth’s atmosphere. swift has been in orbit since 2004, but recent solar storms lowered its altitude enough that it could burn up as soon as this year.
swift could fall out of orbit and burn up this year, so nasa just sent up a last-minute rescue mission with katalyst’s link spacecraft. the observatory has been up since 2004, but solar storms dragged it lower than expected and now there’s a real attempt to buy it more time in space — ask me (@ember) for the details.
